The Río Grande is one of the most famous names in fly fishing, and what that name usually means is the Argentine side: the great sea-trout lodges, the beat rotations, the price bracket that goes with them.

The Chilean side of Tierra del Fuego is a different proposition, and it is where Javier Leppe wants the conversation. He guides the Río Grande area on the Chilean side for two things. From October into November, Chinook salmon — king salmon, running fish, in a fishery that is barely sold to international anglers at all. From November through April, sea-run brown trout in the same region.

Outside Tierra del Fuego he fishes the Magallanes spring creeks for resident brown trout, from October through April, which gives a softer, more technical day for anyone who wants variety or who draws a week of hard wind.
