The trip

The Central North Island offers an unmatched fly fisher’s playground. The rivers running off the volcanic plateau hold robust populations of wild trout, requiring careful wading, polarized glasses, and tactical sight-fishing in gin-clear pools and backcountry streams.

Beyond the rivers, hidden among the landscape are stunning, remote lakes holding truly large fish. Booking a guided boat trip provides an entirely different dynamic. Using specialized casting boats, your guides can cover more water and sight-fish for massive trout cruising the shallow margins or resting in the depths.

For those wanting to test their drags, the coastal shallows of Tauranga Harbour offer a world-class saltwater flats experience. Swap your trout rod for a heavy saltwater setup and hunt the estuaries for roaming packs of ocean predators. Every single day on the water is planned by your independent guide around current conditions, tailored strictly to your personal experience level, and fully outfitted with top-notch gear.

What's covered

Is it for you

Ideal if…

  • you want extreme variety: wading legendary rivers, raft fishing rapids, casting from a boat on alpine lakes, or hunting kingfish on saltwater flats
  • you want to fish during the winter (June–August) when massive runs of Rainbow trout enter the rivers
  • you are a beginner looking for an easy half-day, or a seasoned angler wanting a technical backcountry expedition
  • you want all gear, flies, and transport taken care of by a local expert

Not for you if…

  • you expect accommodation to be included in the price (this is a guiding-only service)
  • you are set on heli-access or raft fishing at the standard daily river rate (these adventures are quoted separately)
  • you expect guaranteed trophies on summer backcountry days (wild rivers require hunting selective fish; winter runs and lake days bring higher numbers)
“Lake and harbour days bring numbers; river days are about a few selective wild fish — no trophy is guaranteed.”

Good to know

Do I need fly fishing experience?

Not at all. Trips are suitable for complete beginners through to experienced anglers. If you’re new, your guide will teach casting, fly selection, river reading, and fish handling. Experienced anglers benefit from local knowledge, technical water, and advanced tactics.

Do I need a fishing licence?

Yes. A valid freshwater fishing licence is required by law in New Zealand. These can be purchased online prior to your trip. Dustin can advise which licence type you’ll need depending on location. A licence is not needed for salt water / sea fishing in New Zealand.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Taupō and surrounds offer many sheltered rivers, so fishing can often continue in light rain or wind. In the case of unsafe conditions, trips may be rescheduled or relocated. Your safety and enjoyment always come first.

Is fly fishing in Taupō a year-round experience?

Yes. The Taupō fishery offers excellent fly fishing all year, with different rivers and techniques shining in different seasons. Winter spawning runs and summer sight-fishing both provide outstanding opportunities. Salt water fly fishing is generally better from November to May.

How far in advance should I book?

For peak seasons, early booking is strongly recommended. Bespoke itineraries and specialty trips often require additional planning. If your itinerary does change, we are can usually change booking given plenty of notice.

Do I need my own fishing equipment?

You can bring your own equipment although it is not necessary. Wild Waters Fly can supply you with great quality equipment tailored to your needs to fish in New Zealand. There are no extra costs to this it’s all part of the guide fee.
