The trip

A fishing adventure with Central North Guiding is about more than simply catching fish—it is about experiencing the incredible diversity of the Taupō region. Centred around New Zealand’s largest and highly productive Lake Taupō, the region's many tributary rivers and mountain streams offer an extraordinary variety of fishing environments.

This fishery is globally renowned for strong, wild rainbow and brown trout, spectacular volcanic landscapes, and exceptional year-round consistency. By booking through FjordAnglers, you gain access to local knowledge, flexibility, and a highly personalized approach. Whether you are chasing a hard-fighting rainbow in winter, sight-fishing to a summer brown, or exploring remote wilderness waters, your independent guide tailors the adventure around you, the conditions, and the season.

This location also puts you within range of many different options, allowing you to move beyond the well-known waters and explore the wider Central North Island for a genuine, world-class freshwater adventure.

Programs

Dry-fly fishing

Used when insect activity allows and temperatures rise, especially good in summer and early autumn. New Zealand is famous for its cicada hatches—fishing during a hatch is more like hunting than fishing!

Backcountry fly fishing

Access more remote streams for sight-fishing opportunities in clear water to much less pressured fish. This style requires good fitness and higher skill ability with a fly rod as the challenge of navigating the rivers and casting in tight areas is tough, but very rewarding.

Raft Fishing

Float the upper reaches of the Tongariro River during the summer months. Experience world-class fishing and spectacular gorge views while your guide paddles you down grade 3 to 4 rapids—a feeling of adventure you will never forget.

Lake fly fishing

Target cruising and feeding trout using streamer, wet fly, and nymph techniques from the shoreline or raft.

Nymphing

A highly effective method in Taupō’s rivers. It reliably produces fish all year round, particularly during the winter.

Streamer fishing

An effective technique for targeting aggressive or moving trout in both rivers and lake environments. Excels in wintertime when there is more colour in the water and migratory fish are present.

On the water

  1. Pickup at your accommodation in the Taupō / Tūrangi area

  2. On the water — licence check, rig up, first pool

  3. Streamside lunch, then move to a second stretch

What's covered

Is it for you

Ideal if…

  • you want wild rainbows on the Tongariro in winter or backcountry browns in summer
  • you can wade all day on rocky riverbeds
  • you're a beginner — lake and lower-river days are set up for first casts
  • you're staying in or around Taupō / Tūrangi (daily pickup included)

Not for you if…

  • you need a half day squeezed between other plans in peak season — ask first
  • you expect a lodge-style all-inclusive — this is guiding only, you book your own accommodation
  • you can't walk on uneven river stones
“Winter runs can be prolific; backcountry days are about a few big, hard-earned fish — no trophy is guaranteed.”

Good to know

Booking through FjordAnglers vs directly with the guide — what is the difference?

When you book through FjordAnglers, you get access to our extensive and constantly growing network of top-tier, verified guides. We do the hard work of vetting every independent guide to ensure they meet the highest standards of professionalism, local knowledge, and fishing expertise. Because we operate a large network rather than relying on just one individual, we offer unmatched flexibility. If a specific guide is fully booked on your preferred dates, or if you want to combine completely different fishing styles across multiple days (like wading a backcountry river one day and casting from a boat the next), we seamlessly match you with the right experts from our trusted team. You get the absolute best local experience and peace of mind, without the hassle of coordinating multiple independent bookings.
